At the end of August, 1916, 17th King's Royal Rifle Corps of 117 Brigade, 39th Division moved to the Somme battlefield where they were engaged in some fierce and costly fighting for the next three months. By the end on November they had moved north to Belgium and were training at Merckegham for the first two weeks of December, 1916. William Hurren died of wounds on 6th December after hasving been evacuated to a base hospital at Etaples on the coast and it is likely that he was wounded when the battalion was on the Somme |
